Concept Explanation

Peripheral Nervous System

Peripheral nervous system includes different nerves from our central nervous system. It is called as peripheral nervous system because it is outside the central nervous system.

The peripheral nervous system includes 12 pairs of cranial nerves arising from the brain and 31 pairs of spinal nerves arising from the spinal cord. It also includes neuromuscular junction.

The nerves from the brain and the spinal cord connect the skeletal muscles and control their activity according to the directions and demands of the body. These nerves are, therefore, related to voluntary acts, i.e., they act according to our will. Such a system of peripheral nervous system is called as Somatic nervous system.

The part of the peripheral nervous system which controls all the involuntary actions of the body is called as Autonomic nervous system.
